I awoke at 06:00hrs and it was a hot start to the day. I tried to fall back to sleep but there is no chance and so I walk into the stream (photo above) and strip to my waist and wash my hair and upper half of my body. The water feels quite cool but refreshing and I spend ages just making myself feel clean.
The others awake later and we have breakfast and then later at we have Kebabs (photo above) and these were great, after several cuppa's we pack up camp and head out on our way to Beringovski at around lunch time.
The scenery is as impressive as ever and again thoughts of the film "Lord of the Rings" comes to mind and at one point I joke and said maybe we should go to the top of the mountain and "light the beacon to let Beringovski know we are on our way" even the name fits doesn't it.
We had been driving around 4 hours and as we were climbing up a small mountain ridge and reached the tip of the ridge , there in the distance was the sea and further to the west was the small mountain settlement of Beringovski itself. This is another one of those ex-military area's and has the usual run down, decayed and war-torn look about it (photo below)
We arrived and within an hour, three of us managed to sort out enough kit for the night and we grabbed a lift in a local car and headed off to the edge of the town and began walking to an area of cliffs where we were advised of a small seabird colony. The walk took just on two and a half hours and was around six miles from the drop off point. It was tough going at times walking up moss covered boulder strewn valley's but finally it opened up and there in the valley below us (photo below) was a cliff face just crammed with seabirds. Time was against us with around an hour or two of light remaining for the day and also the weather was turning for the worse as the fog rolled in, heavy at times and so it was a case of a drop the kits bags and start searching. The sound of kittiwakes filled the air. I have only ever been to seabird colonies in the UK and so to witness this only one would will suffice and that word is "spectacle"
Kittiwakes were present in huge numbers with Glaucous and Slaty Backed Gulls also present, Auks were also present in big numbers but my main aim was the 2 species of Puffin of which I really hoped I would see.
Both horned (photo below) and tufted puffins were present as they flew past at eye level and perched up on the cliff face below. They both sat on the rocks of the cliff face and we all leaned over looking down at them and also at the huge drop below us to the ocean surface. The fog began to get worse and at 23:00hrs we set up the tents and set the alarm for 03:00hrs in order to give us a few hours on site first thing the next morning before having to allow two hours to walk back for our 08:30 pick up to take us back to the town of Beringovski. I lay there in my sleeping bag listening to the cries of the Kittiwakes and the grunts of the puffins as they flew close by and I hoped that the weather would improve and at least give me the chance of getting some photo's of the tufted puffins the following morning.
