Mersing - 09/05/2012.

Another visit to the high tide roost at Mersing was very productive with some good sightings today. Firstly a new site species for me with a cracking Red Knot (above) I first presumed this to be of the race Rogersi but I am now leaning towards the race Piersma, however I did send the photo off to a few people around the globe who have far more experience than I do with these  races and again, Rogersi took the lion share on the vote. Note 2 of 6 the 1st summer Great Knots were also again present today along with 3 Ruddy Turnstones.

Terek Sandpipers were present today and numbers seem to easing off a litte but the flock contained a nice surprise today with a new Grey Tailed Tattler this time in the form of a nice adult bird (2 photos below) and the 1st summer bird was also present.

The 2nd new species for the site came in the form of the adult Curlew Sandpiper (above) This bird  moulting its way in to breeding plumage was another very welcome surprise. A single Malaysian Plover held it's own in amongst the Lesser Sandplovers which seem to be the same as last week. I have left my notes on the island and so I can't remember the exact the numbers off of the top of my head. So until the next time.
